A Day of Inconvenience

- I was coughing and sniffling a bit when I woke up today, may be getting a cold.
- The hot water was out today when I woke up, so I took a cold shower.
- The milk was past expiration, so I drank some diet cola with my breakfast.
- My car rumbled quite a bit on the way to work; the service station told me that the fuel injector on one of the cylinders needs replacing, and that it will cost around $900.00.
- When I got to work, I found out that the computer systems we use are still malfunctioning (they have been since the New Year started), so several programs are unavailable or unreliable.
- My staple remover snapped down the middle today while I was using it.

Still not too bad a day, considering, and I rather enjoy making bulleted lists. Happy New Year to All! Here are some resolutions for this year:
1. Go to the gym and lose weight. A classic that cannot fail.
2. Play and win at least one game of beer pong.
3. At least halve my student loans.
4. Enroll in continued education or at least some type of classroom training or lessons of some sort to expand my horizons.
5. Create a fifth resolution.

Say hello to my lunch for the week, "the B.O.S.S.", a Big Oversized Sub Sandwich from Rainbow Foods. The contents of a B.O.S.S. can vary, but mine contains salami and turkey, two types of cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sauce... all at the price of six American dollars. Six dollars!!! That will get you one measly little sandwich and a drink at a fast food place, or a sandwich a fourth of the size if you bought the ingredients yourself. Six dollars for a sandwich the size of your forearm, an incredibly tasty deal. Sandwich.

I joined a gym today. It's about time. I've gained 15 pounds since starting this desk job, and spent approximately $292 on eating out and fast food last month. I think it would be better for all of us and my budget if I could prevent this trend from continuing. The strategy is as follows:

1. Pack bag lunches and snacks. Avoid the tray of chocolate and candy at the end of the cubicle row.
2. Go to gym in evenings.
3. Find the motivation to keep doing 1 and 2.

Most people quit gyms within 5 months. How long do you think my current exercise routine will last? Until the end of this post?

I suppose another Tennessee update is in order.

We went back to the Parthenon in Centennial Park on Sunday. People nearby were playing soccer, taking engagement or wedding photos, or just reading on the steps. It was very nice and makes me wish we had monuments in Plymouth or New Hope like it. Six dollars to look at the inside.

Inside? Replicas of the Elgin Marbles, a 42 foot tall gilded statue of Athena, and displays about the construction and preservation of the building. The Parthenon was constructed as part of a Centennial fair for the city of Nashville and was the only building that they saved from destruction over the years. Why the Parthenon? Nashville, with its strong educational background, is often referred to as the "Athens of the South." Who knew?

Oh, and let's not forget the obligatory gift shop.

Other than that, not much else is new. Been eating out far too often (Ate Buffalo burgers at Ted's Montana Grill) and moving far too little. Saw "Little Nemo" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on the free movie channel. Looking forward to buying souvenirs at the airport and coming home.

Day Three: Electronic Withdrawal
I didn’t bring my computer on the trip. Or my gameboy. Or my anything remotely electronic and entertaining. I brought my work laptop, but it turns out we don’t need it in class, and we aren’t allowed to use it for personal use. So, rather than crying myself to sleep in the bathtub, I decided to take in some of the sights in Tennessee.

“Country Music, Serious Business.”
First stop, the Country Music Hall of Music and Museum. Learned a lot about Elvis and gobs of other country music stars who I have already forgotten. I don’t mind country music. Some of it is quite listenable. I just never got swept up in the whole cult of personality that surrounds country music stars, much like the cults surrounding movie stars, rock stars and really good sandwiches. I think the highlight of the tour was a car decked out with silver dollars and guns for handles.

We stopped by the Grand Old Opry later, but decided not to take the fifteen dollar tour. Not very interesting to tour an empty building, regardless of how many stars have poured through there… Maybe if it was five bucks instead of fifteen. HOWEVER! The area immediately next to GOO had a shopping mall filled with all kinds of crap, touristy or not. Interesting to look, but I prefer to get my souvenirs at the airport where they cost three times as much.

Did you know that Nashville has a full-scale version of the Parthenon? Neither did I until today. We tried to visit it, but the entire site was sealed off for a massive wedding. You know you have some kind of money when you get to close off a public park for your own massive parties. Oh well. I didn’t want to see your stupid reproduction of Classical Greek architecture anyway!
On a side note, I believe that the Twin Cities should build a full-scale replica of the Sphinx.

Also, they have a Five Guys Burgers down here. I hope I get to stop there before I leave.

Nashville

I never seem to handle air travel very well, but I managed to remain fairly calm during the flight down to Nashville (aside from spilling Pepsi all over my shirt). My first impressions? They carved the entire city out of jungle. Wander three feet off the highway in any given direction and expect to be swallowed alive by foliage. Everything is very green, and lush, and vibrant. A hazy fog covers the landscape, setting the mood more for some kind of Myst-like puzzle game rather than a training conference. The air is thick, humid and difficult to breath. I feel like a fish out of water, only getting shallow breaths. This will take some time to get used to.

The hotel itself? Swank. I think I might steal some of the decorating styles from my king-sized suite when I leave, and maybe a few tiny soaps.

I am off to forage for sustinence. There are several restaurants nearby, and even a Target across the street. My life-long dream of shopping at a Target in every one of the continental United States is about to come one step closer to being reality.

Being sick really takes a lot out of you. This wasn't a normal cold either. All of a sudden, Sunday, horrible chills, shaking, followed by night sweats. Awful stuff. I think I'm out of the woods, but I still feel weak and tired and cranky.

Dentist appointment today. No cavities as usual. More affirmation that my flossing strategy of waiting until something gets stuck in my teeth is paying off.

Ready for the weekend, just got $1600 back from state taxes and pumped it into my student loans. Still have around $14,000 left on those. Watchmen Review

The comic was better. Extreme attention to detail, but still enough changes that it will inspire nerd rage in some fans. Long movie. Best characters are Rorschach and the Comedian. Dr. Manhattan (the big blue naked guy) tends to bore the audience somewhat.

Running very low on sleep, not sleeping well lately. Need a night to recharge and need to stop eating out every day. Good night all.

Tomorrow night at our Homeowner's Association Meeting, PPL (the owner of the unsold units at my condo) will be discussing starting to rent out units rather than sell them. Their plan will hopefully prevent them from defaulting on their utility bills and construction debts and keep the bank from taking custody of the building. I have no idea what would happen in that instance, but my guess is that it wouldn't be good. I'm not opposed to renting out condos, but in all likelihood, the new renters will probably try to raise livestock in the hallway or something equally disturbing.

Work is all right. Every day I get a little sharper. Cases that took me months to close are now getting fairly routine. I want to apply for the tuition reimbursement program they have, but I have no idea where I should take online courses or for what, or if I should even attempt this year. Anyone have any relatives with experience with online continuing education?

Claire's in Hannibal, Missouri putting some new soups through a test run at the real production plant they have down there. I had to deliver her to the airport Monday morning, which meant getting up at 4 am and then going straight to work from there. I got a nap in, so staying up late for Monday night stuff didn't completely wipe me out. I'll be glad when she gets back, but that will also mean I'll have to start eating healthy foods and putting the toilet seat down again. Sheesh, if it's not one thing, it's another.

She tricked me into eating soy disguised as hamburger helper last week! >:(

It's been a long time since I've updated. It's also been a long time since I've had the free time to compose my thoughts. Most days I run about, run to work, run home, run to my parents, run to poker, run to Claire's, run to DnD, run to Cub... steal six hours of sleep here, read a little bit during my lunch break. I don't feel bored, but at the same time, I don't feel like I have a lot of free time.
I suppose I shouldn't complain too much. Roof over my head, food on the table (metaphorically, most food spoils when left out) and work to do. Especially since I spend most of my working hours with those who have hit rock bottom or worse, fifty thousand, hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. It could always be worse.
Valentine's Day is here... and that's about all I have to say about it. Going to eat at a restaurant with Claire. Probably make kissy faces.
